Kylian Mbappé helped guide Real Madrid to the Intercontinental Cup title with a goal in a 3-0 win over Pachuca at the Lusail Stadium on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old’s fitness has been a concern after suffering a hamstring injury in last week’s Champions League win over Atalanta. Mbappé missed Saturday’s 3-3 draw at Rayo Vallecano in La Liga but was deemed fit enough to travel to Qatar.

Mbappé scored the opening goal for Carlo Ancelotti’s side, taking his tally to 13 goals in 23 games since joining from Paris Saint-Germain this summer. Jude Bellingham started a flowing move by playing in Vinícius Júnior, who went around Pachuca keeper Carlos Moreno before pulling the ball back for the French striker to score.

Mexican team Pachuca beat Copa Libertadores winners Brazil’s Botafogo 3-0 and then beat Egyptian side Al-Ahly on penalties to reach the final. They started stronger as Luis Rodríguez forced a save from Thibaut Courtois before Oussama Idrissi and Alán Bautista saw their chances come and go.

After Mbappé struck in the 37th minute, Real Madrid took the lead, Federico Valverde shot just wide of the goal and Bellingham’s header also missed the target. They scored their second goal eight minutes into the second half when Rodrygo twisted and turned before firing an unstoppable shot into the top corner from 20 yards.

Courtois was back in action to fend off Bryan González’s attack and then parried an effort from 35-year-old former West Brom and Everton striker Salomón Rondón. Real secured victory with six minutes left when Lucas Vázquez was brought down by Idrissi in the penalty area and Vinícius converted the penalty.

After winning three trophies in the original Intercontinental Cup, which pitted European and South American champions against each other, and a further five Club World Cups, Real Madrid have now won a total of nine global titles. The annual FIFA tournament was renamed the Intercontinental Cup. A new quadrennial Club World Cup begins next summer with 32 teams.

“We are very happy about another title,” Rodrygo told Spanish television station Telecinco. “I was a bit worried about the goal because Jude was in front of the goalkeeper but he didn’t disrupt the game so I’m happy to help the team.” Vinícius is great, he’s playing really well at the moment and we’re happy to have him with us. We have a great team and we’re excited.”
