La Canfora: ‘Not out of the question’ Steelers are bringing back both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields in 2025

The Pittsburgh Steelers are expected to use Russell Wilson at quarterback beyond the 2024 season, and with Wilson and Justin Fields both set to be free agents after this season, NFL insider Jason La Canfora could envision the Steelers using both quarterbacks retrieve. On The Tony Kornheiser Show, La Canfora discussed Pittsburgh’s quarterback situation, saying that Pittsburgh is unlikely to leave the organization for its next quarterback and that both Fields and Wilson could be back on the Black and Gold roster in 2025.

“The question is, who do you get and where does he come from? They’re not going to draft a game-ready draft, they’d have to mortgage multiple drafts to move up and even come close to that. Could they bring back (Justin) Fields and Russell Wilson? I don’t think it’s out of the question,” La Canfora said.

It would be a surprise if Pittsburgh were able to bring both back, with each expected to have a starting quarterback contract. A Baker Mayfield-like contract (three years, $100 million) was inked for Wilson, and after opening the season 4-2 as Pittsburgh’s starter, Fields could draw interest elsewhere as a starter. La Canfora said if Sam Darnold gets the franchise title, Wilson and Fields could hit the market as the top two free-agent quarterbacks.

The Steelers probably won’t want to pay Fields as much as some other teams if he’s just a backup player and used in occasional package games. That’s why it would be a bit of a shock if he returns if the team wants to keep Wilson. While Wilson started strong for the Steelers, they are in the midst of a three-game losing streak and Wilson has committed three turnovers in the last two games and recorded five sacks in the team’s loss to the Chiefs in Week 17. Obviously this mistake isn’t his alone, but he hasn’t played as well as he did a few weeks ago.

This probably won’t impact Pittsburgh’s future plans too much, as it seems like the team wants to bring him back and has seen enough to be comfortable with it. Opting to have Fields behind him would be an interesting decision, and it would allow the Steelers to move quickly into action if Wilson struggles next season. But it would essentially be a lot of money for a backup quarterback, and the Steelers still need to address other areas to become a legitimate contender.

A lot can change between now and the offseason, but while it’s a possibility, it would be a huge surprise in my eyes if the Steelers re-signed both Fields and Wilson this offseason.
