LA chase ends when car airbags deploy in North Hollywood – NBC Los Angeles

A high-speed chase in the San Fernando Valley ended Monday when the driver collided with another vehicle on a North Hollywood street and hit a curb, deploying the car’s airbags.

The chase began east of Los Angeles with a report of a reckless driver in a black Ford Taurus. The driver was traveling west through the San Fernando Valley from the Sunland-Tujunga area at a high rate of speed.

At some point, the driver found himself on the wrong side of the 210 Freeway before turning back onto the dirt shoulder. There were several bottlenecks at busy valley intersections.

In North Hollywood, the Taurus ran a red light and was struck on the rear of the driver’s side. A short time later, the driver hit a curb and the car’s airbags apparently deployed.

The car stopped and the officers followed. There was a standoff in the residential area around 3:30 p.m. when the driver didn’t get out. The driver, wearing sunglasses and a hat, appeared to pull out the airbag and look out the driver’s side window.

The door opened and closed several times, but the driver remained in the car. Sometime shortly before 5 p.m., the driver exited the vehicle again and officers threw the person to the ground and restrained him.
