LA Fires: What impact would a fire of this size have on where you live?

The fires that raged in Los Angeles County last week have burned more than 40,000 acres of land, an area equivalent to about 1,800 Alcatraz Islands or 400 Disneylands, or slightly larger than Washington, DC

A dry fall and winter dried out vegetation after two wetter-than-average years and provided fuel as a storm with hurricane-force winds of more than 100 miles per hour ripped through the region. The wind-whipped flames quickly spread across much of the county.

The Palisades Fire, which swept through the L.A. community of Pacific Palisades and parts of Malibu, and the Eaton Fire, which burned Altadena, have damaged or destroyed an estimated 12,000 homes and other structures. At least 24 people have died, making 2025 one of the deadliest and most destructive years on record, less than two weeks into the year.

Two other fires in the area – the Kenneth Fire near Hidden Hills and the Hurst Fire in the San Fernando Valley – have been largely contained, according to CalFire.

It’s hard to imagine how dramatically Los Angeles – California’s largest city in both size and population – will be affected. However, to get a sense of the extent, you can enter a California address into the tool below to compare fire boundaries to any area across the state.
