LA Galaxy vs New York Red Bulls live updates: Results, highlights, analysis for MLS Cup 2024

CARSON, Calif. – Yahoo Sports has live coverage of Saturday’s 2024 MLS Cup Final, pitting the LA Galaxy and New York Red Bulls in a heavyweight-underdog showdown. The game begins at 4:10 p.m. ET and 1:10 p.m. PT at the Galaxy’s Fortress, Dignity Health Sports Park. Fox will broadcast the final in the USA. Fans can also stream it on Apple TV’s MLS Season Pass in England or Spanish.

The Galaxy are seeking a record sixth league title after an exciting season marked by big-name signings and free agent moves. But on Saturday they will be without midfield maestro Riqui Puig, whose cruciate ligament tear leaves a huge gap in their attack. Can Greg Vanney’s team adapt and bring Los Angeles another championship?

On the other hand, the Red Bulls have defied all odds to get here. After sneaking into the playoffs as the East’s seventh seed, they battled past defending champion Columbus, then crosstown rival NYCFC, and then Orlando. They were fueled by hard pressing and a strenuous defense led by goalkeeper Carlos Coronel. Now, with history on the line, Sandro Schwarz’s team has the chance to create one of the league’s greatest Cinderella stories.

Will the Galaxy’s star power shine through, or can the Red Bulls pull off one final upset and win their first MLS Cup?

  • Vanney in the first half

LA Galaxy head coach Greg Vanney summed up the first half aptly in an interview with Apple:

“I was really happy with the first 20 to 25 minutes. We dominated the game in every respect. We allow them to get too many field positions and they get set pieces…”

Says they need to “reorganize” and put pressure on the ball further up the pitch.

“We have to keep pushing. We don’t have to defend 2-1, we have to move the game forward.”

  • HALFTIME: Galaxy – Red Bulls 2-1

After 45 minutes the home team were in the lead thanks to the Galaxy’s early advance, but the Red Bulls’ unfortunate goal gave the visitors new life.

  • 47′

Galaxy captain Maya Yoshida dropped a dime for Joveljic in the box, but the Serb was unable to convert his shot, which went straight into the waiting hands of Coronel.

  • 38′ Yellow card

The second violation of the day is shown to Los Angeles’ Mark Delgado after he tackled New York’s Emil Forsberg and the two ended up on the turf.

Red Bulls defender Noah Eile receives a card for a tactical foul on Galaxy’s Gabriel Pec shortly after his teammate was nutmegged twice.

  • This is a teammate

  • Galaxy is suddenly on the defensive

The goal seemed to have shaken the hosts a little, no matter how fortuitous it was. Their defense on a few more set pieces was also hesitant. And they weren’t so confident on the ball.

  • The Red Bulls take advantage of the corner kick

  • 28′ GOAL

SEAN NEALIS SCORES A POINT FOR THE VISITORS AND WE HAVE A GAME IN CARSON! Galaxy 2-1 Red Bulls

  • Galaxy is really responding to the Red Bulls’ sudden weakness

The build-up to both goals cut right through the heart of the NYRB defense.

Andrés Reyes is usually there. And he was there until about 15 minutes before kickoff, when he suffered a scratch due to illness.

The Galaxy go straight to his late replacement, 22-year-old central defender Noah Eile.

  • Galaxy with an exceptional start

  • 13′ GOAL

DEJAN JOVELJIC sneaks past Coronel who was caught looking! IT’S 2-0 GALAXY!

  • Paintsil makes it 1-0 for Galaxy

  • Excellent Galaxy goal

It started with a neat double in midfield – exactly the kind of possession game we weren’t convinced the substitutes of Riqui Puig and Marco Reus were capable of.

In fact, it was Gastón Brugman – often viewed primarily as a destroyer – who imitated Puig best: he pushed a wonderfully weighted through ball to Joseph Paintsil, whose shot slipped under Red Bulls keeper Coronel.

    1-0!

  • 9′ GOAL

JOSEPH PAINTSIL shoots into the penalty area and the home team is 1-0 ahead! GASTON BRUGMAN SERVED IT BEAUTIFULLY!
