Lake effect snow and strong winds reach central New York

A strong cold front exiting the East Coast is bringing sharply colder air and strong winds to much of the region today, with lake effect snow already forming.

Lake effect snow warnings are in effect on the Tug Hill Plateau until 7:00 p.m. Friday night as over 2 feet of snow accumulation is possible at the highest elevations.

In addition to the heavy snowfall, strong winds will produce drifts and drifts that will likely reduce visibility and impact travel north during the remainder of the work week.

The heavy snowfall will miss Syracuse, making cold temperatures and strong winds a bigger weather issue for cities along the highway and to the south. Expect wind chills in the teens, if not single digits, this afternoon through Friday morning. If you have to stay outside for a long time, please make sure you wear appropriate clothing.

Overnight into Friday morning we will begin to notice heavy snow accumulation east of Lake Ontario, even extending into lower elevations in Oswego County.

The lower elevations of Oswego County could see a total of between 5 and 10 inches of snowfall through Friday evening.

Cold temperatures will persist through Friday night and Saturday before gradually warming to over 40°C by Sunday.
