Lake effect snow creates stark contrasts in snowfall across Central New York communities

Central New York is experiencing lake effect snow, and some areas like Oswego County will have more severe snow than others Thursday evening.

There was some snow in Liverpool, but lake effect snow increased just north in Oswego County.

Marcia Lowther, from Liverpool, is surprised that one area can have a lot of snow while another, further down the road, has clear skies.

“It amazes me. I can’t remember, when I was younger, I thought if I was here on the west end of town, my mom would be on the north side and it was snowing like crazy.”

Neighbors in Oswego County, like Aaron Wren, said it was snowing heavily in one spot while everything was fine in another spot nearby.

I mean, with the snow, sometimes it’s just stunning. They can be blocks that are three feet long and others that are two blocks away.

David Green said he drove more than 140 miles through Oswego, Onondaga and Oneida counties on Thursday and described it as a tough day of driving.

“It’s pretty tough today. Wherever it snowed, the roads were very slippery. There have also been times when they have been clean, so it’s a back and forth.”

Neighbors like Wren, who are already dealing with the snow, share tips for dealing with the weather, like how to stay informed about what’s going on.

In winter you really need to stay up to date with the weather and be alerted. It can really vary from a few centimeters to a few feet.

The lake effect snow we are seeing is very dense and it will take some time to shovel it off the driveway or your car before you head out the door. So take the time to prepare for this weather.
