Lakers injury report: Anthony Davis provides update after leaving game

The Lakers’ already thin frontcourt suffered another major blow on Wednesday. Midway through the first quarter of their Christmas game against the Warriors, Anthony Davis twisted his ankle and left the contest.

Although it was initially questionable whether he would return, he remained in the locker room, did not make the starting lineup in the second half and was ejected from the contest late in the third quarter.

AD tried to continue playing after the injury but had to withdraw from the game. The Lakers were forced into a super small lineup without him.

After AD was ruled out, ESPN’s Dave McMenamin reported that AD is being viewed as a day-to-day approach.

After the Lakers’ win, Anthony Davis spoke with McMenamin and said he would play against the Kings on Saturday.

It goes without saying that losing AD would be painful even under normal circumstances. But the Lakers are already without Jaxson Hayes due to his ankle sprain and Christian Wood, who is recovering from knee surgery.

On Wednesday that meant Rui started the second half in the center while Christian Koloko played more prominently. Although it worked in spurts on Wednesday, this is not a viable long-term solution and probably not a good solution in the short term either.

Davis has been a stalwart for the Lakers over the past two seasons and has shed the injury-prone labels associated with him, fair or foul. Additionally, he is playing at an MVP level this season.

The Lakers seemed to have some things figured out in recent weeks, and losing AD would be a major blow to their momentum. Currently, his status after Wednesday’s game is uncertain.

The Lakers will be back in action on Friday if he does not return for Wednesday’s game. His availability for this game will indicate how long he could be out.
