Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James is expected to miss his first game of the season as the Lakers announced he will miss Sunday’s game against the Portland Trail Blazers.

James was sidelined due to soreness in his left foot, while guard Austin Reaves will sit next to him on the bench due to a bruised left pelvis.

James averaged 23.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 9.1 assists for the 12-11 Lakers, who are playing their first year under head coach JJ Redick. He was still fantastic in his 22nd year and has a phenomenal resume that includes accolades such as four NBA championships, four NBA MVP awards, 20 All-NBA team awards, 20 All-Star team awards, four NBA Finals -MVP awards and three Olympic gold medals. And this year, he and his son Bronny James became the first father-son duo to play in the NBA at the same time (and on the same team, even).

As for the injury, this illness is a setback for James and the Lakers, who will have to move forward without their leader.

Without James, Anthony Davis will undoubtedly see more action. He’s already the team’s leading scorer and rebounder, but AD will be the Lakers’ offensive focus when James isn’t on the court.

Expect Austin Reaves and D’Angelo Russell to handle the ball and also provide more relief for the Lakers.

James’ absence could mean more minutes for exciting rookie Dalton Knecht, who showed promise in extended appearances in Summer League and the preseason and impressed off the bench at times in his rookie year.

Look for Cam Reddish to see more court time too. Both can be counted on, especially as Jarred Vanderbilt recovers from offseason foot surgeries.
