LeBron James believes Wednesday night’s thriller between the Los Angeles Lakers and Golden State Warriors proved that basketball still surpasses football as the top sport on Christmas Day.

“I love the NFL, I love the NFL. But Christmas is our day,” James said after the Lakers’ 115-113 win.

Austin Reaves made a layup with 1.1 seconds left in a tied game, sealing the Lakers’ holiday win over Steph Curry and the Warriors.

Curry had previously shot two three-pointers to equalize in the last 13 seconds of regulation time.

Curry led the Warriors with 38 points while going 8 of 15 from behind the arc.

Meanwhile, James, filling in for the injured Anthony Davis, paced the Lakers with 31 points and contributed 10 assists in the win.

The Lakers’ win, which marked the fourth time Curry and James faced off on Dec. 25, wasn’t the only close call the NBA made on its banner holiday.

The New York Knicks secured a narrow victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday despite a 42-point performance from Victor Wembanyama, while the Philadelphia 76ers defeated the reigning NBA champion Boston Celtics.

These games competed for spectators and featured an early afternoon matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Pittsburgh Steelers, followed by an evening game between the Baltimore Ravens and the Houston Texans. Both football games ended in defeat.

The NFL began designating December 25 as its regular game day in 2020 and has now hosted multiple games on the holiday for four consecutive seasons.

It looks like James is hoping the NBA’s slate of close matchups, capped by a classic battle between two of the league’s veteran stars, will help the league stay on schedule for Christmas Day, even as the NFL continues tries to take over the holiday.
