Lakers’ LeBron James (left foot pain) is out against the Trail Blazers

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Lakers star LeBron James missed his first game of the season against the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday night because of soreness in his left foot.

James, 39, first experienced the discomfort during LA’s loss at the Miami Heat on Wednesday.

On Friday, James played a season-high 43 minutes in an overtime loss at the Atlanta Hawks, finishing the game with 39 points on 14-for-25 shooting, 11 assists, 10 rebounds and 3 blocked shots.

This season, James is averaging 23 points on 49.5% shooting (35.9% from 3), 9.1 assists and 8.0 rebounds – by far the most of any player in NBA history have reached the same level as James in their career.

James was listed as doubtful with the injury on Sunday and was then upgraded to probable that morning before being downgraded back to doubtful following the team walkthrough a few hours before tipoff.

“If LeBron is out, we have to move, we have to cut, we have to pass,” Lakers coach JJ Redick said before the Blazers game. “We will have to play in the transition period. And I think overall for our team we just need to come back and really emphasize getting a touch of color on every possession. We did that at the start of the year and got away from it and we need to get back to it.

LA won’t play again at the Minnesota Timberwolves until Friday and won’t practice until Wednesday. Redick said the break could be beneficial for 22-year veteran James.

“They certainly don’t want to take him out of the lineup, but he has the opportunity to rest for four days before we go back to practice,” Redick said. “So it could be really good for him.”

Lakers guard Austin Reaves was also sidelined, missing a fifth straight game with a left pelvis bruise.
