The Minnesota Timberwolves and Los Angeles Lakers are each earning narrow victories by one point ahead of their meeting tonight at 8:00 p.m. ET at Target Center.

Anthony Davis Over 41.5 points + rebounds + assists (-110 at bet365)

My analysis

Anthony Davis has been outstanding this season, averaging 28.6 points, 11.5 rebounds and 3.2 assists. He started the season with a strong performance, posting a 36/16/4 record against the Minnesota Timberwolves, and I expect him to put up big numbers again against them tonight.

As good as Davis has been since 2022, he was even better against Minnesota. He averaged 32.4 points, 14.7 rebounds and 3.8 assists in his last seven meetings with the Wolves. He has hit the over on this line in all seven matches.

Although the Timberwolves’ defense was in the top 10 in points allowed per game, Minnesota was only mid-table against opposing centers. The Wolves have allowed 40.3 PRAs to opposing big men this season. This includes the eleventh most points and the ninth most assists. The Wolves gave up the second-fewest rebounds to opposing centers, but I’m not worried about that. Davis excelled as a rebounder against Minnesota, knocking down at least 13 boards in five of his last seven games against Minnesota.

Davis faces three-time Defensive Player of the Year Rudy Gobert, but Gobert’s 2024 numbers don’t paint the picture of a great defender. Gobert ranks 33rd among centers in defensive rating. Julius Randle (plays PF but qualifies as center) is ranked 61st and backup big man Naz Reid is ranked 46th.

This is not an intimidating frontcourt for the opposing bigs. In Minnesota’s last three games, Ivica Zubac scored 16/13/1, Domantas Sabonis posted 27/12/5 and Alperen Sengun finished the game with a triple-double (22/10/11). All three performed above their season averages in PRAs.

Davis can benefit from a defense that was much better on the outside than on the inside. The Wolves have allowed the seventh-most points this season but have only made the third-fewest three-pointers.

Davis has averaged just 41 PRAs at home this season, but he has posted 46.3 on the road. He has reached the over in 12 of 19 overall and seven of nine away games. The Los Angeles Lakers big star had great success against Minnesota, but we get this odds and the -110 odds at a steep discount, making the pick an easy one.

The Lakers are 2-1 after three straight losses, but hold a 7.5-point lead against a Wolves team that has won just once in its last four games.

Los Angeles is just 8-12 this season, while Minnesota is 6-13. The Wolves are just 2-8 ATS at home and 3-5 ATS when favored by 7.5 points or more this season.

The Lakers are 2-1 ATS without a break and are up 3-0 in this situation. The Lakers are 4-3 ATS in their last seven games in Minnesota and have beaten LA in three straight games. This includes two games as underdogs. Los Angeles soundly beat Minnesota in the first game and there is no reason to believe the Lakers can’t keep this game close.

Like Davis, Julius Randle has put up strong numbers against today’s opponents in recent seasons. Randle has averaged a whopping 27 points, 11.6 boards and 4.8 dimes in his last eight games against the Lakers, hitting the over on that line seven times.

The only exception was his debut in Minnesota on October 22nd. Randle had a disappointing first appearance for his new team, but he has put up solid numbers since then. The big man has reached the over in 11 of 18 games since the opener, averaging slightly more PRAs at home than away. Randle has reached the over in six of 10 home games, and he should do it again tonight against a team that allows the ninth-most points and fourth-most assists.
