Lamar Jackson passes Michael Vick for most rushing yards by NFL QB

HOUSTON — On a day when Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson didn’t feel like he was running at top speed — despite being clocked at over 21 miles per hour — the reigning NFL Most Valuable Player added another title : the all-time leading rushing quarterback.

In a 31-2 Christmas Day victory over the Houston Texans, Jackson passed Michael Vick for the most rushing yards by a quarterback in NFL history. With 87 rushing yards on Wednesday, Jackson now has 6,110 career rushing yards, one yard more than Vick (6,109).

Jackson broke the record with a 6-yard scramble in the third quarter that set up his 1-yard touchdown pass to tight end Mark Andrews.

“It feels unreal, to be honest,” Jackson said. “I am grateful because this is a record that has been around for a long time. Michael Vick is one of my favorite players. That’s just amazing.”

Vick held the record for 13 years after surpassing Randall Cunningham for most rushing yards by a quarterback in October 2011.

The most impressive thing about Jackson breaking Vick’s mark is the speed at which he did it. It took Vick 143 games in 13 years to reach his total, but Jackson broke the record with just 102 games in seven seasons.

“That speaks for itself,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. “Sometimes I just shake my head and say, ‘That was a really great piece. That was a great piece.’ I’ve seen a lot of great plays from Lamar Jackson. Not only am I proud of him for making great plays, he’s making great plays and I’m also grateful for all the things he’s overcome along the way.

The Ravens (11-5) are one win away from repeating as AFC North champions after Jackson missed the game in the third quarter. With Baltimore leading 17-2, Jackson ran 48 yards to the end zone without being touched.

Jackson’s top speed on this run was 21.25 mph, the highest top speed of his career as a ball carrier. Jackson gave a questioning look when told about the speed he had reached while running.

“Really?” Jackson replied. “I went jogging.”

Jackson passed Vick in a season in which he ran the least. After a 24-19 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on December 1st, he was even criticized by his mother for not running. Jackson’s average rushing attempts this year are 8.4 per game, which is the first season in which he has fewer than 9 runs per game.

On Wednesday, he provided a reminder of how he can beat teams with his legs. He rushed for a total of 87 yards on four carries, including the 48-yard touchdown run – the third-longest run of his career.

Jackson has totaled four rushing touchdowns of 40 yards or more, tying Kordell Stewart for the most by a quarterback since 1950.

“I’ve never seen anyone run the ball like Lamar at quarterback or, frankly, any other position,” Ravens offensive tackle Ronnie Stanley said. “The effortless way he runs the ball makes those defenders not look as fast as they are. That’s why I’m impressed with everything he does every day.”

It wasn’t a perfect day for Jackson. Earlier this week, he talked about watching Beyonce’s halftime show at NRG Stadium. But Jackson was nowhere to be found on the field when the 32-time Grammy winner performed.

“I was locked up,” Jackson said. “I was here in the locker room getting ready for the second half.”
