Lara Trump resigns as RNC co-chair, addressing speculation about a Florida Senate seat

Lara Trump will step down as co-chair of the Republican National Committee as she considers a number of possible options for returning her father-in-law, President-elect Donald Trump, to the White House.

Those possibilities include replacing Florida Senator Marco Rubio Trump has chosen to be the next Secretary of State. If Rubio is confirmed, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis will decide who fills the seat for the remainder of Rubio’s term, which expires in 2026.

“It’s something I would seriously consider,” she told The Associated Press in an interview. “If I’m being completely transparent, I don’t know exactly what that would look like. And I definitely want to get all the information possible if this is real for me. But yes, I would 100% consider it.”

Lara Trump, who was elected RNC co-chair in March, was a key figure in Republicans retaking the White House and control of the Senate while maintaining a leadership role narrow majority in the House of Representatives. What she does next could shape Republican politics given her elevated political profile and ties to the new president.

The idea of putting a member of the Trump family in the Senate has been praised in some Republican circles. Among the people pushing for her to replace Rubio is Maye Musk, mother of Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk.

“The Senate is an old men’s club. We urgently need a smart, young, open woman who will reveal her secrets,” she wrote on X. Lara Trump is 42.

Elon Musk, who was with Lara Trump at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida on election night, responded to his mother’s post: “Lara Trump is really great.”

Led by Chairman Michael Whatley and Lara Trump, the RNC invested heavily in recruiting some 230,000 volunteers and an army of lawyers for its so-called “election integrity” efforts, four years after Donald Trump lost his re-election bid to Democrat Joe Biden due to false citations or unproven theories about voter fraud. Outside groups such as Turning Point Action and Musk’s America PAC took greater responsibility for advertising and voter turnout efforts.

While Whatley will remain RNC chair, Lara Trump said she feels she has achieved her goals in the co-chair role.

“With this big win, I kind of feel like my time is up,” she said. “What I intended to do has been done.”

Lara Trump praised Musk’s new venture, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a non-governmental task force led by Musk and fellow entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy. They were recruited to lay off federal workers, cut programs and eliminate federal regulations as part of Trump’s “Save America” agenda for his second term.

“I really don’t think we’ve seen a movement like this in our federal government since the founding of our country in many ways,” she said. “And I think if they’re successful at what they’re trying to do, I think it’s going to be a big change for America.”

She said she expects a different presidency this time, starting with the structure of the government: While Trump’s daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner served as White House advisers in his last administration, Lara Trump said she doesn’t see any family member working together this time takes a position in the White House with her father-in-law.

“He really wants to come in there and do a good job for four years, and that’s all he wants to serve,” she said. “Four years and he’s out.”

Lara Trump also says she expects the Republican Party to be more united than ever before. When she became co-chair in May, the Trump campaign and the RNC merged, laying off staff and restructuring positions. She said the result could spell trouble for Republican lawmakers who disagree with Trump’s agenda.

“The whole party has completely changed and completely transformed,” she said. “I think people are a little more courageous about expressing their political views.”
