Last minute Christmas shoppers flood stores as online deadlines expire

With Christmas just a few days away, online shopping deadlines have passed. When it comes to last-minute gifts, shoppers prefer to shop in person to check everything off their list.

“So this weekend is the busiest weekend. I call it crunch time and we’ve now entered panic shopping mode so the queues this morning were just outrageous, even for a Sunday. “It looked like a smaller version of Black Friday,” Cabela’s assistant general manager Jessica Keefer said.

According to the National Retail Federation, consumers are expected to spend $900 per person on holiday shopping this year. That’s an increase of about $25 per person compared to last year.

“People want that feeling of rush when they’re waiting to make last-minute purchases, and we definitely saw that this weekend,” Keefer said.

Consumers said last-minute gift shopping can be stressful, but sometimes it’s the only way to fit it into the schedule.

“We haven’t had time the last few weeks,” said buyer Caleb White. “It’s the only day we have this week, so we’re trying to take advantage of what we can.”

Caleb and Gage White said they were shopping for their parents today and made sure to get an early start.

“So far it’s not that bad. We’re trying to get the crowd’s attention before it gets really, really bad and just stay ahead of the whole deal so we don’t get stuck in all the traffic and all the nonsense that’s going on this weekend.” White said.

According to the National Retail Federation, 45% of holiday shoppers bought their gifts before November to preserve their budget and avoid crowds. Meanwhile, 62% expected their purchases to be completed in December.
