LeBron James and Stephen Curry take 3rd place in NBA All-Star voting

The first round of the NBA’s All-Star voting was released Thursday afternoon, and in the latest sign of changing times in the Association, both LeBron James and Stephen Curry are ranked third at their respective positions.

James is third in the West frontcourt voting with 1.17 million total votes – still in a starting spot – behind Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic, with 1.4 million votes, and Phoenix Suns forward , Kevin Durant, with 1.27 million, although James does have a significant lead for the third and final seed over his Lakers teammate Anthony Davis and San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama, both of whom are over 900,000 votes have poured.

Curry, meanwhile, could be left off the bench in the West for the second straight season as he trails Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (1.05 million votes) and Dallas Mavericks guard Luka Doncic (870,071). sits and puts him to the test 60,000 votes ahead of Curry for third place.

However, Doncic will be out for the next few weeks with a calf strain, which could allow Curry to get back on the roster and play in its home All-Star game in San Francisco in February.

In the East, Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo is once again at the top of all voters with 1.7 million votes cast so far, after ending James’ seven-year streak as the top overall voter last year. He is followed by Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum (1.38 million), who is on track to reach his sixth straight All-Star Game, while New York Knicks center Karl-Anthony Towns is with took third place with just over a million votes.

No other East frontcourt player has even half a million votes, putting these three in a very good position to finish the voting in these three spots.

The closest battle of any position group is in the East backcourt, where LaMelo Ball is in first place with just under a million votes, but Donovan Mitchell of the NBA front-runners Cleveland Cavaliers is just 13,000 votes ahead of Bucks guard Damian Lillard for the second seed in the East.

Jalen Brunson is in fourth place with just under 500,000 votes, while Trae Young is fifth with just over 350,000 votes.

Voting totals will be updated again on January 9th and 16th, with voting ending on Monday, January 20th. Fan voting accounts for 50 percent of the vote when it comes to who starts, with media and player voting each accounting for 25 percent.

The starters for both conferences will be announced on January 23rd, with the reserves a week later.
