Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James had a message for the NFL after the team’s narrow win over the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday night.

James scored 31 points and dished out 10 assists as Austin Reaves’ go-ahead shot gave the Lakers a 115-113 victory. But as the NFL approached the NBA’s most exciting day of the regular season, James sent a warning shot to the league.

“I love the NFL. I love the NFL. But Christmas is our day,” he explained.

Last year, the NFL scheduled three games on Christmas Day because it fell on a Monday. This year two games were planned for Christmas. In 2022, regular season games fell on Christmas Day.

NFL officials said last year that the league would not schedule games on Christmas if it fell outside of a normally scheduled day.

“We saw the opportunity with Thanksgiving and some of the viewership we continued to build there,” Hans Schroeder, the NFL’s executive vice president of media sales, told the Wall Street Journal at the time. “We believe there is a chance, if the calendar allows it now, even at Christmas when we know our fans will be together.”

It wasn’t until four months later that the league made a U-turn.

“The fans have spoken clearly,” Schroeder told the Wall Street Journal in March. “The demand is great.”

The report noted that the NFL typically gave away the day to the NBA and other programs and even moved the old NFL championship from Christmas when it fell on that day.

This year, NFL games were available to watch on Netflix. When the reviews come out, everyone will see if James is right.
