LeBron James on a reason the Lakers’ defense struggled against the Mavs

The Los Angeles Lakers completely failed against the undermanned Dallas Mavericks team on Tuesday, losing 118-97, handing them their second straight loss and their third in the last five games. Dallas dismantled them with dribble penetration and quick passes, resulting in 18 of 38 from 3-point range.

But on the other hand, the Lakers did nothing to compensate. They made just 11 of their 35 3-point attempts and shot a mediocre 45.3% overall, and LeBron James said afterward that that was a big factor in why they didn’t do well defensively.

“When the ball pops and the ball goes in, you can play defense with a set defense,” James said. “If not, they go out and run or turn the ball over, which we didn’t do too often. But offense can help defense just as much as defense can help offense. It’s just another night for us where we’re like, “We’re not good offensively.”

Los Angeles also outrebounded 11 and gave up 11 offensive rebounds, which the Mavs converted into 15 second-chance points. It was a repeat of the biggest problems LA has faced since last season.

With a record of 20-16, James and his team now occupy sixth place in the Western Conference. The team will return home on Thursday for the first of five straight games at Crypto.com Arena.
