LeBron James doesn’t have to give the Los Angeles Lakers a lead to win. He was the team’s top scorer just four times this season. (By comparison, Anthony Davis led the Lakers in 11 points.)

However, if he only scores 10 points, it’s hard to believe the Lakers will win. James posted his lowest total of the season in the Lakers’ 109-80 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday night.

This was only the 17th time in his career that he scored 10 or fewer points. By reaching 10 on Monday, James has now reached double figures in 1,243 consecutive games, an NBA record. That series certainly bothered him as he only had eight points in the fourth quarter. James finally got it to 10 by hitting two free throws with 8:51 left in the game.

James’ low point this season was 11 points on October 28 against the Phoenix Suns. He scored 12 goals in Friday’s 101-93 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder, which may raise questions about how James is feeling. Cameras showed him flexing his right hand on the bench near the end of Monday’s game after Lakers coach JJ Redick cleared the bench in a blowout.

D’Angelo Russell ended up leading the Lakers with 20 points (4 of 5 from 3) and five assists. Davis added 12 points with 11 rebounds and five assists, while Rui Hachimura tied James with 10 points. Dalton Knecht scored six goals while shooting 3 of 8 from the floor (and 0 of 5 from 3).

The 80 points are also the Lakers’ lowest point total in their 21 games this season. After a 105-104 victory over the Utah Jazz on Sunday, the team played the second part of back-to-back games.

Minnesota had two nights off before Monday’s game but may have been affected by the Lakers’ low energy. Throughout the game, it seemed like the Timberwolves might sweep the Lakers off the floor, but they couldn’t really break through until a breakaway dunk by Rudy Gobert gave them an 86-66 lead with ten minutes left in the fourth period.

Julius Randle led Minnesota with 18 points, followed by Gobert’s 17 and 12 rebounds. The difference in the game was that the Timberwolves got 54 points from their bench, led by Naz Reid and Nickeil Alexander-Walker, who scored 15 points each. Minnesota also shot 43% (15 of 35) from 3, compared to the Lakers, who shot 19%. Mike Conley and Donte DiVincenzo each shot 3 for 6 from distance.

The Lakers have a day off before continuing their road trip at the Miami Heat on Wednesday. The Timberwolves also begin a three-game series against the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday.
