Leicester City 0-2 Manchester City: Pep Guardiola celebrates milestone as Erling Haaland scores to win

Pep Guardiola celebrated 500 games as Manchester City manager with a nervy win over Leicester.

Savinho and Erling Haaland gave the struggling defending champions just a second win in their last 10 Premier League games.

It still wasn’t enough to catapult them back into the top four, instead they remained fifth and 11 points behind leaders Liverpool before the Reds traveled to West Ham later on Sunday.

Guardiola had promised not to give up despite the worst period of his coaching career, but the visitors were living dangerously at the King Power Stadium as Jamie Vardy went close twice and Facundo Buonanotte hit the post for the Foxes.

Of course, City’s confidence needs to be rebuilt, but it was good enough to beat a Leicester side that is fading after a promising start under Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Since the sacking of Steve Cooper in November, the Foxes have now suffered four defeats in a row and five in seven games, leaving them in the relegation zone.

Vardy had the hosts’ best chance in the first half but was denied by Stefan Ortega after a mistake from Josko Gvardiol before Buonanotte’s header bounced off the post, but by that point they were already behind to Savinho’s 21st-minute goal – his first for City.

Goalkeeper Jakub Stolarczyk, who saved Haaland early on, parried Phil Foden’s shot and winger Savinho shot high from six meters.

Leicester still felt they could exploit City’s shaky defense and James Justin almost equalized in the second half, only for Manuel Akanji to break away with a free-kick.

Vardy, who also hit the crossbar late on, then fired over from six yards before Haaland ended any hopes of a comeback by heading in Savinho’s cross with 16 minutes left.
