At this year’s MTV VMAs, Lenny Kravitz won Best Rock Video for his song “Human.” He took a moment on stage to remember his late mother, who died in 1995. Before her death, she attended the VMAs with her son, and Kravitz remembered that moment in his speech.

“This is incredible. “I’m so grateful,” he began. “31 years ago my mother was with me at an awards show, the VMAs, so I dedicate this book to her. I thank God for this journey, this incredible journey. I thank Jesus for life.”

He also remembered his mother Roxie Roker with a post on social media before the awards ceremony. He posted a video of the two of them at the VMAs in 1993 and included a heartfelt caption. “Having my beautiful mother by my side at my first (VMAs) 31 years ago is a moment I will always cherish,” he wrote. “I look forward to taking the stage all these years later where she will be in my heart.”
