Light and variable wind at the beginning of December

HONOLULU (KHON2) – The weak boundary approaching from the northwest will stall and dissipate northwest of coastal waters for the remainder of the weekend.

Otherwise, a weak subtropical ridge axis will persist over or near the islands with weak ridges aloft until mid-next week.

Winds will become light and variable across much of the state Sunday through Monday, then remain on the lighter side through Wednesday.

During this period, clouds and showers are expected in the late morning/early afternoon due to the daily sea breeze, concentrated on the mountains and inland areas of each island.

Due to large-scale atmospheric stability, precipitation amounts will be low.

Long-term model forecasts continue to show a shallow cold front moving into the Western Isles from the northwest through Thursday.

While the GFS and ECMWF still differ in the speed of the front, increased showers and windy trade winds will develop along the weakening boundary as it moves further east.

All islands are likely to benefit from a period of increased showers along the frontal band, particularly along windward mountain slopes.

In both models, the front stalls near Maui Friday morning and dissipates or dissipates in the afternoon, with remaining unstable cloud bands drifting onto each island as a result of increasing easterly trade winds.

The global models both suggest another front will approach the state from the northwest Saturday night into Sunday. Uncertainty remains as to whether the border will reach the islands before it dissipates.
