Light snow and cold temperatures continue, but snow levels in the city are well below average

CHICAGO — Light snow that fell across the city early Friday is expected to ease by early evening, leaving about an inch on the ground.

The small snow system moving into Chicago will hit the city with “varying intensity” throughout the day, said Gino Izzi, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

And yes, you’ll probably need to shovel – because the cold temperatures are here to stay.

“The snow tends to get lighter in the afternoon,” Izzi said. “At the end there is still one or two centimeters left on the ground.”

Temperatures will hover around 20 degrees Friday, Izzi said. He’s also keeping an eye on a system that could bring another “small shot of light snow” on Sunday.

On Sunday, maximum temperatures could be around freezing and below 30 degrees, said Izzi.

Although the winter of 2024 was unusually warm, there will be no relief from the seasonal chill any time soon.

Chicagoans should expect daytime highs in the teens and overnight lows in the single digits early next week, he said.

As for snow, the city is 7 to 8 inches below normal snowfall for this time of year, Izzi said.

“We’re at the lower end of the spectrum,” Izzi said. “Snow is like throwing darts. You’ll strike at some point. But so far we have avoided it.”
