“Like Water for Chocolate” renewed for second and final season at HBO

The fire and the passion in Like water for chocolate isn’t over yet: Max has renewed the Spanish-language romance for the second season, which will be its last.

Salma Hayek Pinault, who serves as an executive producer on the series, announced the renewal at an HBO and Max showcase in London on Thursday. She added that the series wouldn’t go beyond Season 2 because “we don’t want to do more than two. “We want it to be very special,” our sister site Deadline reports.

Like water for chocolate was originally a 1992 film based on the Mexican novel by Laura Esquivel. The series follows the eventful and turbulent romance between Tita and Pedro. While Tita is clearly in love, their relationship is thwarted by family turmoil, causing Tita to grapple with the many flavors and magic of cooking in the fight for love.

“This second season of the series will complete the story and fuse essential aspects of Mexican culture, such as magical realism and gastronomy, acting as forms of expression and connection,” said Mariano Cesar, SVP of general entertainment content and programming strategy at Warner Bros. Discovery for Latin America and US Hispanic, in a statement. “These themes are developed from a female perspective, with the questioning of social and familial mandates reinforcing the contemporary relevance of the narrative.”
