Detroit Lions offensive lineman Dan Skipper was called in from the 9-yard line on Sunday. He made sure he reported himself as eligible.

Skipper achieved a level of notoriety in Detroit that few linemen achieve when he was in the middle of a controversy last season. On a tricky 2-point conversion attempt against the Dallas Cowboys, Skipper declared himself eligible to play, but the officials failed to recognize that Taylor Decker was also eligible. The Lions have often used Skipper as an extra lineman since then, and when officials announce him as cleared to play, the Lions crowd usually cheers sarcastically.

There was nothing sarcastic about the celebration on Sunday. The Lions run more trick plays than anyone else in the league, and they played by their rules heavily against the Buffalo Bills. The play consisted of Skipper peeling off and intercepting a pass from the 9-yard line. Of course, no one covered the 330-pound lineman and he got into the end zone for the score.

It wasn’t Skipper’s first catch in his career. Last season he had a 4-yard gain. But it was his first career touchdown. This is a cool moment for a seven-year NFL veteran whose only claim to fame was being involved in a debacle with the referee last season (or being congratulated by Dan Campbell for vomiting).

Skipper probably didn’t expect to catch touchdowns on Sunday. The Lions called his number when they trailed 21-7, proving there is no situation where they wouldn’t go for a trick. And with that, Skipper’s popularity in Michigan continues to grow.
