Lions vs. 49ers Result, Live Updates: Detroit looks to build some momentum in the finale of the Monday Night Football season

The Detroit Lions franchise finds itself in an unfamiliar position at the end of the 2024 season. Next Sunday, they will face the Vikings in the first-ever matchup of the season between teams with more than 13 wins for all the NFC (regular-season) marbles. But before the season begins at home, they’re in San Francisco on Monday night to face a 49ers team that has limped to the finish line through an injury-plagued season.

It seems like every position group in San Francisco has been decimated by injury at one point or another this season, and in Week 17, that affects the offense. Three starters – Aaron Banks, Spencer Burford and Colton McKivitz – are on the injury report entering this week, with Banks and Burford not in practice and McKivitz participating on a limited basis.

Unless there is a tie in next week’s Lions-Vikings game, tonight’s result will have no bearing on the NFC’s No. 1 seed. The winner of next week’s Lions-Vikings matchup in Detroit will clinch the NFC North and the No. 1 seed in the playoffs. Head coach Dan Campbell says the Lions are “bringing everything they’ve got into this game” and won’t give any starters a break.

Live13 updates

  • We have an incompleteness

Jared Goff’s incomplete pass with 5:05 left in the first half is the first pass by either quarterback in the game. These crimes are having a field day.

  • 3 49ers drives, 3 49ers TDs

San Francisco’s offense is off to its best start of the season. The 49ers now lead 21:13 after their third touchdown in three drives. Ricky Pearsall set up the ball with a 40-yard grab from Brock Purdy before Purdy shot the ball into the basket himself from nine yards.

Not a good sign for a struggling Lions defense on the cusp of the playoffs.

  • Jameson Williams is Dangerous Part II

There is no substitute for speed. Jameson Williams scored just his second touchdown of the night on a third-and-12 hook and lateral from Amon-Ra. St Brown. The 49ers’ defenders had no chance as Williams sprinted down the sideline for a 42-yard score.

Ben Johnson’s magic strikes again, but it begs the question: Why not save that for the playoffs? But Johnson certainly has plenty of other tricks up his sleeve for the postseason.

49ers 14, Lions 13 early in the second quarter.

  • Nick Bosa is released, could be injured

Nick Bosa has just sacked Jared Goff on first-and-20, but is in the medical tent on the sideline after taking a helmet-to-helmet hit to the sack from a friendly firefighter.

  • The 49ers score again

That’s two touchdowns on two drives for the 49ers, leaving fans in Santa Clara wondering where this offense has been all season. Brock Purdy finds Kyle Juszczyk for a nine-yard catch-and-rumble through the Lions secondary to tie the score. 49ers 14, Lions 6 early in the second quarter.

  • Ricky Pearsall makes another nice catch

Ricky Pearsall is a nice player. After securing the contested touchdown grab on San Francisco’s first drive, he kept the drive alive with this catch, complete with a self-tip and a toe drag near the sideline on third down.

After a gunshot wound derailed the start of his career, Pearsall showed promise late in the season and could be an integral part of San Francisco’s offense in 2025.

  • Lions’ response

Jameson Williams is a weapon. The Lions wide receiver took an end-around untouched into the end zone for a 3-yard touchdown run. With his speed he makes plays all over the field. Got a nice block from Sam LaPorta on the score.

The 49ers blocked the resulting extra point and led 7-6 after one possession for each team.

  • The 49ers strike first

San Francisco came to play. The 49ers ran a trick play and then converted fourth down inside the 10 to set up the first-and-10 play. They paid for it with a second-down touchdown pass from Brock Purdy to Ricky Pearsall that required a replay assist to confirm. 49ers 7, Lions 0 after the opening drive.

  • We are on the way. The Lions won the coin toss and were eliminated, and the 49ers received the opening kickoff. San Francisco begins the game on offense at its own 39-yard line.

  • Teddy Bridgewater prepares for his role as Detroit’s emergency quarterback:

  • Unless there is a draw in next week’s duel between the Lions and the Vikings, today’s result will not matter in the race for number 1. Thanks to an earlier win over the Vikings, the Lions maintain the tiebreaker lead over Minnesota and would clinch the NFC North title and the No. 1 seed in the NFC if both teams finish with a record of 14-3, a result , which would result from a The Lions lose tonight and win next week.

The loser of next week’s game will be relegated to a No. 5 seed and a first-round road game in the postseason.

A Lions loss tonight would only come into play in the event of a draw next week. If that happens, the Vikings would finish at 14-2-1, ahead of the Lions at 13-3-1 overall.

  • Lions inactive: Teddy Bridgewater is emergency QB

Teddy Bridgewater just coached his high school alma mater to a state championship and will make his Lions debut in 2024 as a backup quarterback. Bridgewater signed his second stint with the Lions last week and most likely won’t see the field on Monday night.

  • Ji’Ayir Brown and Colton McKivitz are active for the 49ers

There are no notable surprises among the inactive people in San Francisco. Starting right tackle Colton McKivitz will play after being listed as questionable with a knee injury. As does starting safety Ji’Ayir Brown, who was previously questionable with an ankle injury.
