Lions vs. Bears Week 16 Stock Report: 10 advancers after windy City win

The Detroit Lions bounced back well in Week 16 against a Chicago Bears team that remains in disarray. It was a nice, palate-cleansing win and the Lions walked away healthy, which is a big win given how things have turned out over the last few weeks. Here are your risers for the week following their 34-17 win over the Bears.

Filling: Jameson Williams, WR

Statistics: 5 rec, 143 yards, 1 TD; 1 rush, 7 yards

Jamo was the star of the show on offense on Sunday. He caught everyone’s attention with an 82-yard touchdown reception and continued to show off the rest of the afternoon. Williams continues to find ways to showcase his talents even as he competes with the many other talented players on the Lions’ offense. We’re seeing much more consistency in his effort and production week after week, with this being his fourth game in the last five with five receptions. The increased reliability and performance is a welcome development for Williams in year three.

Cover: Terrion Arnold, CB

Statistics: 6 tackles, 1 pass defended

The Lions lost Carlton Davis for the remainder of the regular season and probably longer, leaving the notoriously skilled Terrion Arnold in the role of number one cornerback for Detroit. In his first week on the job, he stepped up to the plate and played a clean and close game against DJ Moore and Keenan Allen. Arnold bit on a double play from Keenan Allen just before halftime to give up a touchdown, but it seemed to me he was expecting additional safety help from Ifeatu Melifonwu, which was just one second too late. Arnold continued to have a good day after that, including several clean but physical reps in the red zone at the end of the game.

Covering: Christian Mahogany, G

Mahogany had a similar role to Terrion Arnold, taking over the starting left guard role since veteran Graham Glasgow missed Week 16 with a knee injury. Mahogany stepped in without much interruption and kept the pocket clean for Jared Goff on Sunday. He also showed good field vision blocking on the Lions’ many running back screens. It was a promising first start for the rookie and a good sign for the future given Graham Glasgow’s recent struggles.

Stock neutral: Ifeatu Melifonwu, S

Statistics: 4 tackles, 1 sack, 1 TFL, 1 QB hit

Iffy returned to the lineup for the first time this year and shined from the start, making a blitz on the first drive. He had a solid performance on the day, including a sack and a timely hit on a receiver late in the game to seal the deal for the Lions. The only blip on his radar was costly, coming just a second late on Keenan Allen’s touchdown late in the first half. It seemed like Arnold was expecting excessive safety help, but it turned into the Bears’ second touchdown of the first half. Otherwise, a solid performance from Iffy and a welcome return to the lineup.

Filling in: Jared Goff, QB

Statistics: 23/32, 336 yards, 3 touchdowns

Goff continued his streak on Sunday, dismantling the Bears’ defense at every level. We even got some bonus theatrics from him and Jahmyr Gibbs on the fake tripping trick that led to a Sam LaPorta touchdown. Goff continues to show growth in his ability to navigate the pocket and even move it laterally on occasion.

Most impressive, however, was his all-time touchdown pass to Jamo for an 82-yard touchdown. Goff threw the ball long before Jamo broke through the defense, in cold weather conditions that he previously reportedly struggled in. The offense — and the Lions as a whole — need it most.

Quick hits

Stock up

Amik Robertson, CB: Robertson has quietly become another reliable player in this defense week after week. He had another solid performance on Sunday against a talented Bears receiving corps.

Jack Campbell, LB: Campbell had a nice recovery week against a poor Bears running game after struggling in Week 15 against the Bills.

Al-Quadin Muhammad: Muhammad, just like he did three weeks ago, came up with a late sack to send the Bears away.

Stock neutral

Jake Bates, K: It looks like Bates had just enough leg on his 65-yard field goal attempt, which is crazy considering the December cold in Chicago. It’s a shame he missed it, but it’s fun that we were able to witness the attempt. He scored his other tries and helped keep the Lions in the lead all afternoon.

Inventory reduced

Jack Fox, P: Fox’s only punt of the day was a short one that needed a very favorable bounce to make the stats look better.
