(3:00 p.m. ET) Wreck lays section of Mass. Pike lame

According to the Massachusetts DOT and the Auburn Fire Rescue Department, a multi-vehicle crash occurred on the Massachusetts Turnpike, Interstate 90, eastbound between State Route 56 and Exit 90 in Auburn, south of Worcester, around 1:30 p.m

No injuries were reported, but that eastbound section of the Mass Pike was closed. This illustrates that heavy snow accumulations on the roads are not necessary to make driving slippery and dangerous.

(2:40 p.m. ET) A Different Kind of “Whiteout”

Bianca Barr, content manager at Weather.com and a resident of State College, Pennsylvania, pointed out these cool photos from Beaver Stadium the day before the Penn State Nittany Lions play the SMU Mustangs in the first round of college football’s first round Receive playoffs.

We cannot completely rule out severe weather, the increasing snowfall will be over by Saturday’s kickoff at 12 p.m. ET.

(2:20 p.m. ET) A view from snowy Boston

The photo below was sent to us moments ago from Weather.com’s Morning Brief senior writer Chris DeWeese from Logan Airport in Boston.

He said he didn’t have any flight delays, but there was some slush on an elevated section of highway in the city while driving from Logan Airport.

The National Weather Service has officially measured 0.5 inches of snow at Logan Airport as of 1 p.m. ET. In Dedham, Massachusetts, just off Route 128, there is 5 cm of snow so far.

Snow continues in downtown and most of the metropolitan area, except for the South Coast and Cape Cod, where winds come from the sea and precipitation remains as rain in Cape Cod Bay.

(1:55 p.m. ET) Ground stops at New York City airports

Just announced by the FAA, there are now ground stops for all arrivals at JFK, LaGuardia and Newark due to snow and ice (LGA and EWR) or volume (JFK).

Check your flight status before heading to the airport if you have a flight into the New York subway this afternoon.

Delay status at New York metro airports as of Friday, December 20 at 1:55 p.m. ET.

(1:45 p.m. ET) Visibility obstruction

One of my favorite photographers, Dave DiCello, captured this view of Pittsburgh this morning, obscured by a wall of light snow and low clouds. This is what the view would normally look like.

About an inch of snow has been reported so far, with isolated light snowfall continuing in western Pennsylvania.

(1:30 p.m. ET) A ground delay now, a big game tonight

The FAA is now reporting ground delays for departures to South Bend Regional Airport in Indiana, with average delays of just over an hour and fifteen minutes due to snow and ice.

We are now approaching 6 hours before kickoff for tonight’s game between the host Fighting Irish and Indiana Hoosiers.

Elsewhere in the Northeast, a ground stop is now scheduled for Boston-Logan (due to low clouds) and JFK Airport (due to traffic volumes). De-icing delays continue in Detroit, Pittsburgh, Windsor Locks Bradley Field and Providence, Rhode Island.

(12:20 p.m. ET) First One Foot Plus Snow Total

A reliable rule of thumb that I have found in over 28 years of meteorology is to “adopt” the snowfall forecasts for the Alberta Clipper systems in the Midwest.

We just received the first total snowfall of more than a foot, 13.8 inches of snow measured near Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, about 30 miles northeast of Madison.

(12:10 p.m. ET) Where the snow lies now

Wet snow continues to fall over portions of the New York Tri-State area, generally from Manhattan and western Long Island to New Jersey, the lower Hudson Valley and Connecticut.

Light snow will fall over much of Pennsylvania north and west of a line from Allentown to Lancaster and over much of central and western New York State.

Rain will mix with snow in Ohio, while patchy light snow continues in eastern Indiana and especially eastern Lower Michigan.

(11:50 a.m. ET) Foggy headaches in California

We previously mentioned that a ground stop was ordered at Lindbergh Field in San Diego due to fog.

Departures from LAX are now briefly delayed, and departures to John Wayne Airport in Orange County are now suspended due to low clouds and fog, according to the FAA.

A dense fog warning is in effect for parts of LA and Ventura County until 9 a.m. PT.

The famous “Tule Nebula” is now firmly established in the Central Valley. A dense fog warning remains in effect there until 11 a.m. PT.

This visible satellite image shows where areas of fog and low clouds (highlighted by the yellow arrows) are located in California on Friday morning.

(11:25 a.m. ET) The lake’s impact has arrived in Chicago

Lake-shaped snow streaks have moved to Chicagoland, including the northwest Indiana suburbs, according to radar and satellite images.

The snow is light at the moment. According to the NWS-Chicago office, this lake effect snow is expected to shift primarily to northwest Indiana this evening, potentially causing slippery travel on the Indiana Toll Road and Interstates 65 and 94.

(11:10 a.m. ET) Ground delay now in Boston

The FAA is now reporting ground delays for departures to Boston-Logan Airport, with average delays of 49 minutes.

Here is a beautiful aerial video taken this morning in Cambridge, Massachusetts, showing snow-covered terrain along the Charles River.

(10:50 a.m. ET) Airport delays continue

According to the FAA, dense fog has resulted in a grounding of all departures to Lindbergh Field in San Diego.

We also reported de-icing delays at Boston-Logan, Washington-Reagan National, Pittsburgh, Detroit and Salt Lake City.

(10:40 a.m. ET) Two large pockets of snow

The latest radar shows two main areas of consistent light snowfall: Indiana to western Ohio and western and central Pennsylvania to western and central New York.

So far, most roads are wet with temperatures in the 30s, but not too muddy in Cincinnati, according to Ohio DOT cameras.

Light rain is falling in the Washington, D.C. metro But farther north, some wet snowflakes are now falling in Newark and Trenton, New Jersey.

(10:20 a.m. ET) Higher snow potential

The National Weather Service just issued a winter weather advisory for portions of southeastern Massachusetts and northern Rhode Island. This includes much of the Greater Boston area, excluding the South Shore and Cape Cod.

Intermittent light snowfall was reported at Boston’s Logan Airport this morning.

The map below shows the “high-end snowfall” potential according to the National Weather Service forecast. In other words, this is generally the highest snowfall possible through Saturday morning. As you can see, there is potential for some 6-inch-plus totals in parts of eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island through Saturday morning if the lineup is right.

“Highest potential for snowfall” through Saturday morning in southeastern New England, according to the National Weather Service.

(9:35 a.m. ET) Snow before the game

Chris Dolce, senior meteorologist at Weather.com, noticed this photo broadcast from Notre Dame Stadium earlier today. The Fighting Irish host the Indiana Hoosiers tonight in Game 1 of the College Football Playoff.

The snowfall should be over by kickoff at 8:00 p.m. ET. This should allow teams to clear snow from the field. However, those traveling to the game from northern Illinois, Michigan or Ohio may encounter snow-covered roads.

Our College Football Playoff forecast also covers two more playoff games on Saturday that could be pretty cold.

(9:20 a.m. ET) Almost a foot of snow

Snow totals have now reached 10 to 11 inches in parts of Ozaukee and Washington Counties in eastern Wisconsin.

Some improvements from Lake Michigan as well as stronger snow bands resulted in higher totals there.

Elsewhere we have totals of 4 to 7 inches in southern Lower Michigan and 1 inch so far northwest of Pittsburgh.

(9:00 a.m. ET) Snow falling in the Midwest, interior Northeast

Light snowfall is slowly tapering off in Chicagoland, although a band of lake-effect snow is taking shape over Lake Michigan that could potentially reach parts of the metro later today.

Otherwise, light snow will fall in lower Michigan, central Illinois, northern Indiana, western and central Pennsylvania, and western and central New York.

The snow has stopped in Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Here you can access your own interactive radar.

(8:50 a.m. ET) Flight delays at some major airports

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, Chicago O’Hare previously reported departure delays averaging about 45 minutes. However, this is no longer the case as snowfall subsides.

Otherwise it occurs on the routes Boston-Logan, Detroit, Dallas-Ft. to delays due to de-icing. Worth, Pittsburgh and Salt Lake City.

Check the status of your flight before heading to the airport.
