NORAD Santa Tracker 2024

Most nights, the North American Aerospace Defense Command scans the skies for potential threats.

On Christmas Eve, volunteers in Colorado Springs answer calls from at least 100,000 children about Santa’s whereabouts.

NORAD’s pursuit of Santa Claus began in 1955 with an accidental phone call from a child.

A Colorado Springs newspaper published a Sears ad encouraging children to call Santa Claus and providing an incorrect phone number. A boy called but instead reached an emergency phone within NORAD.

Air Force Colonel Harry W. Shoup responded and a tradition was born.

Some have questioned the history, but the annual tradition lives on.

NORAD will track Santa Claus until 1 a.m. Central Time.
