Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau looks on during a news conference September 26 in Montreal, Canada

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will announce he is stepping down as leader of the ruling Liberal Party on Monday, but will remain prime minister until a new leader is elected, a source close to the prime minister told CNN.

Trudeau, leader of the Liberal Party for 11 years and prime minister for nine, has faced a series of crises ranging from Donald Trump’s tariff threats to the resignations of key allies to disastrous opinion polls. His resignation would be seen as a decision by the prime minister to jump ship before being pushed ahead of a general election later this year, which he is expected to lose.

The move would leave the Liberal Party without a permanent leader ahead of the general election. Polls show she is expected to lose badly to the opposition Conservative Party led by the fiery Pierre Poilievre. The election must take place on or before October 20, but could be brought forward.

The Liberal Party’s national board, which oversees leadership issues, is scheduled to meet this week, probably after the election meeting.

Trudeau has been elected three times, most recently in 2021, when he remained in power but lost his governing majority. Since then, the Conservative Party, led by the fiery Pierre Poilievre, has built a lead of more than 20% over the Liberal Party in national polling averages.
