PLAINS, Ga. – Six days of funeral services for former President Jimmy Carter begin today, stretching from his farm to the state Capitol in his native Georgia.

Saturday’s procession begins in Americus before making a brief stop at his childhood home in Plains. The motorcade will then take Carter’s remains to Atlanta, where they will stop at the State Capitol and hold a ceremony at the Carter Center.

Carter was 100 years old when he died on December 29 in his beloved hometown of Plains. He was the oldest living president.

A peanut farmer who served as governor of Georgia, he was the 39th President of the United States, serving one term from 1977 to 1981. His long post-presidency was marked by humanitarian work around the world and a Nobel Peace Prize.
