Live updates: SCOTUS considers gender-affirming care for minors, banning transgender care in Tennessee

Some parents of transgender children in Tennessee say they plan to uproot their families and move to states where they can safely and legally receive gender-affirming care.

Jason, the father of a 10-year-old transgender girl in Middle Tennessee, told CNN he gave up his decades-long career to find a job that would allow him to move with his family. His daughter is currently only receiving psychological counseling, but the father wants her to have the option of puberty blockers or hormone therapy when she is ready to make a decision.

“We need to be able to seek medical care for our child if he or she desires it,” said Jason, who uses only his first name out of fear of retaliation from local conservative groups.

Jason said he knows several other families with trans children who want to leave Tennessee.

Sarah, a mother of three in Nashville, said she will “do anything” to ensure her 16-year-old trans son has access to his testosterone therapy, including moving out of state. She uses a pseudonym out of concern for her family’s safety.

Sarah is currently driving her son from her home in Nashville to a clinic in North Carolina for treatment – about a 10-hour day trip. She said she will closely monitor the Supreme Court’s decision as she weighs whether to move.

“We will get through this. I won’t do anything drastic right now, but if it comes to that, I’ll do everything I can to keep us safe and make him happy.”
