A shooting at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin, on Monday left three people dead, including the 15-year-old suspected shooter, and six others injured.

Shooting at Abundant Life Christian School

Timeline: Here’s what happened on Monday, December 16th:

  • 10:57 a.m.: A second-grader called 911 to report a shooting at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin. Police later said the shooting occurred in the classroom when the classes were mixed.
  • 11 a.m.: A Dane County Sheriff’s deputy arrived at the scene, followed by a Madison Police Department officer. Shortly thereafter, authorities entered the school.
  • 11:05 a.m.: Authorities reported recovering a gun at the school and told others that the shooter was on the ground. The Madison Fire Department arrived on scene and began working with officers providing assistance. Police began setting up a reunification center for parents and students.
  • 11:13 a.m.: Madison police released a statement about the school shooting.
  • 11:14 a.m.: Law enforcement worked to clear students, teachers and staff from the building.
  • 11:23 a.m.: Bomb dogs arrived on the scene and began searching the school.
  • 11:26 a.m.: Firefighters began transporting the victims to the hospital to receive treatment for their injuries. Police noted that emergency medical services arrived at the scene about 20 minutes earlier and were cooperating with officers.
  • Press conferences: Police held four press conferences at 12:15 p.m., 2:30 p.m., 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m

What we don’t know: The police did not provide any further information about which grades were in the study hall. It is unknown if the second-grader who reported the shooting was in the classroom.

The school is a private Christian school that is not part of the public school system. Abundant Life Christian School is a K-12 school with approximately 390 students.

Who is Natalie (Samantha) Rupnow, the suspected shooter?

What we know: Madison police identified the suspected shooter as 15-year-old student Natalie Rupnow, who called herself Samantha.

According to police, she apparently died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was pronounced dead on the way to the hospital. The Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the official cause of death.

Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes said investigators spoke with the shooter’s family members and searched her Madison home Monday evening.

Authorities are still working to determine the motive behind the shooting, but believe only one shooter was involved.

Who are the victims of the shooting?

Dig Deeper: Three people were killed – a teacher, a teenager and the suspected shooter – and six others were injured, police said.

Of the six injured, two students remain in critical condition with life-threatening injuries. A teacher and three other students were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, but two have since been released.

Police initially reported that three people died as a result of the shooting, but during a news conference on Monday, authorities announced that five people had died. Police later corrected on their Facebook page that three people had died.

Police have not yet identified the victims or provided further details about those injured.

Local perspective: The Madison police chief said his officers were trained for a situation like this school shooting just two weeks ago. These officers are trained to “stop the killing, stop the dying and find out who is responsible.” The officers did not fire their weapons.
