Live Vote Counting: Track House Speakers’ votes

Lawmakers will gather in the House of Representatives around noon today to vote on Rep. Mike Johnson’s bid for re-election as speaker. The Times will follow the votes live.

Note: To win, a member must receive a majority of votes cast for an individual, “current” votes are not counted. The constitution requires members of the House of Representatives to elect the speaker, but the speaker need not be a current or even former representative.

Mr. Johnson’s ability to win re-election is uncertain given Republicans’ narrow 219-215 majority following the resignation of Matt Gaetz of Florida.

While Mr. Johnson received the support of President-elect Donald J. Trump, the Louisiana congressman faced opposition from several right-wing members over last month’s bipartisan agreement to keep the government open and a failed attempt to raise the debt ceiling.

If all members are present and vote and Democrats support their leader, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York, as expected, Mr. Johnson can lose only a single Republican vote.

Without a speaker, Congress would not be able to convene in the constitutionally required joint session on Monday to certify the results of the 2024 presidential election.
