Liverpool extended their lead at the top of the Premier League to four points with a dominant but chaotic 6-3 win at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday thanks to braces from Luis Díaz and Mohamed Salah.

Díaz met Trent Alexander-Arnold’s beautiful cross with a diving header to open the scoring, before Alexis Mac Allister nodded in a header from close range to double Liverpool’s lead.

James Maddison equalized four minutes before half-time after Mac Allister was brought down in midfield by Dejan Kulusevski, giving the hosts a way back into the game.

But Dominik Szoboszlai scored in first-half injury time to restore the Reds’ two-goal lead and give Spurs a mountain to climb.

Salah scored twice in seven second-half minutes, his 14th and 15th league goals of the season, moving him past Liverpool star Billy Liddell, who is on the club’s all-time goalscoring list. That made it 5-1 and sent some Spurs fans heading for the exits.

“I’m happy and proud, I’ll just keep working hard,” said Liverpool’s fourth-best goalscorer

Kulusevski’s volley was followed by Dominic Solanke’s goal in the 83rd minute, giving Spurs hope of an unlikely comeback, before Díaz made it 6-3 two minutes later, ending a crazy contest that could have produced even more goals.

“We were pretty good up front but defensively we need to improve as a team,” Salah told Sky Sports. “The result is pretty good and hopefully we’ll just keep going.”

Liverpool are at the top with 39 points from 16 games, four points above second-placed Chelsea, who have played a game more. Spurs remain eleventh with 23 points from 17 games.

Arne Slot’s side were constantly dangerous in attack and Salah should have given them the lead within three minutes when Spurs goalkeeper Fraser Forster, who made two costly errors during the week, passed straight to him in the penalty area but Salah missed his Shot.

Salah then hit the crossbar after beating three defenders with silky-smooth footwork, but the visitors deservedly took the lead in the 23rd minute when Díaz headed home with all his might.

A second shot seemed inevitable and came in the 36th minute after Andy Robertson’s cross to Szoboszlai rebounded kindly for Mac Allister, who nodded past the onrushing Forster.

However, Mac Allister was to blame for Spurs’ first goal, which came out of nowhere and should have given Spurs a platform to claw their way back into the game.

But Szoboszlai made it 3-1 by running onto Salah’s through ball and ultimately cornering Forster with a sweeping move.

Salah came into action after the break, firing the ball into the goal from close range in the 54th minute and adding another goal shortly afterwards when Szoboszlai put the ball on a plate.

Liverpool showed no signs of sitting back and Forster was forced to make a good save from Alexander-Arnold before Kulusevski and then Solanke raised the prospect of a remarkable comeback.

But Díaz delivered a neat finish against Forster five minutes from the end of normal time, ending a breathless encounter that fell two goals short of the Premier League record.
