Liverpool vs Man United: Game continues despite heavy snowfall

Liverpool’s Premier League game against Manchester United on Sunday will take place despite heavy snowfall in the north of England.

The game was in danger of being postponed but Liverpool have confirmed it will go ahead after two safety meetings to assess the weather and travel conditions.

While the playing surface at Anfield was not affected by the conditions due to ground warming, a safety advisory group involving Liverpool City Council and emergency services considered canceling the game due to disruption on local access roads and safety concerns for traveling supporters.

The snowfall also led to the closure of runways at Liverpool and Manchester airports on Sunday, while Liverpool Lime Street station – the city’s main station – said it would not be able to operate until around midday at the earliest due to the conditions.

“Today’s game against Manchester United will take place as planned. Two safety meetings were previously held to assess the weather and travel conditions,” Liverpool said in a statement on Sunday.

“We thank everyone who helped us put this game together today. If you travel to Anfield please take extra care. We look forward to seeing you there.”

A postponement would have left Liverpool facing fixture congestion in the months following the postponement of the Merseyside derby against Everton at Goodison Park last month due to strong winds from Storm Darragh.

Arne Slot’s team begin this week’s two-legged Carabao Cup semi-final against Tottenham and face Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup third round at Anfield next Saturday. Liverpool are also top of the Champions League and confirmed for the final stages of the competition.
