Longtime Baltimore Orioles pitcher Brian Matusz has died at the age of 37

Brian Matusz, who played 279 games over eight seasons for the Baltimore Orioles, has died. He was 37.

“Our hearts are heavy tonight as we mourn the passing of former Oriole Brian Matusz,” the team wrote Tuesday on X. “Brian was a fixture in our clubhouse from 2009 to 2016 and was beloved throughout Birdland. His passion for baseball and our community was unmatched. He dedicated his time to connecting with all the fans he could, was a valued teammate and always had a smile on his face.”

The team did not disclose how he died.

Matusz, a left-handed hitter, last played in the Major Leagues in 2016, capping an MLB career that began in 2009. Matusz played high school baseball in Phoenix and attended the University of San Diego, MLB.com noted.

He made it to the majors as a starter. In 2010, he won a career-best ten games, but a few seasons later he took on the role of a reserve player. In 2013, 2014 and 2015, Matusz made 186 appearances with a 3.32 earned run average over that period.

He also played in the postseason for the Orioles in 2012, including five games against the New York Yankees in the American League Division Series, and in 2014.

All but one of his 280 appearances came with the Orioles. He ended his career in 2016 with a start for the eventual World Series champion Chicago Cubs.
