Looking ahead to Monday, a mix of snow and wintry weather will move into the region

4Weather warnWINTER WEATHER ADVICE: Issued for most of southeastern Michigan from 12:00 p.m. Monday to 1:00 a.m. Tuesday (10:00 p.m. Monday in our M-59 Corridor Counties) due to wintry precipitation and increasing snowfall depending on location in the region comes . This will impact holiday travel as we work a large portion of our Mondays.

MONDAY: Cloudy sky; Wintry mix and snow formation late morning and into the afternoon. Warmer temperatures may see accumulating snow and other areas may experience sleet and some freezing rain. Areas closer to the state line may experience a brief transition to rain before winter weather returns as temperatures drop. High: 35; Temperatures remain near freezing in our northern communities. Winds: South wind 5-15 MPH with gusts up to 20 MPH.

MONDAY EVENING: Wintry mix and snowfall ending around midnight or just after midnight. Low: 32.

TUESDAY (CHRISTMAS EVENING): Mostly cloudy skies. High: 37.

TUESDAY EVENING: Mostly cloudy skies. Low: 29.

WEDNESDAY (CHRISTMAS DAY): Mostly cloudy skies. High: 38.

As we head into the holiday week, we’re looking at a bit of a wintry mess moving into the region, and depending on where you are, what you see will depend. Here’s a breakdown of what you can see depending on where you live:

Along and north of M-59: These areas should see mostly snow this evening, with the exception of light sleet/mix near M-59 this afternoon/evening. These areas could see 2 to 4 inches of snow, with areas near Saginaw and the Thumb possibly seeing 3 to 5 inches of snow.

Along and south of the M-59 to I-696/I-94 corridor: These areas could see snow initially before a wintry mix of snow, sleet and possibly some freezing rain develops. Areas from M-59 to I-696 could see 1 to 2 inches of snow, which then transitioned to some sleet and freezing rain, where sleet and ice accumulations were possible in some areas.

SOUTH OF THE I-94 CORRIDOR: In these areas it will initially snow and then quickly change to a wintry mix. Areas of eastern Wayne County and portions of Monroe County may then experience rain for a period of time before returning to a wintry mix and then snow as this system moves out of the region. A centimeter or less of snow is expected, with a light accumulation of sleet and freezing rain possible.

The wintry mix and snow will taper off here or after midnight tonight and we will keep cloud cover in the forecast tonight. Lows overnight remained around freezing and early Tuesday morning.

Looking ahead to Tuesday, cloud cover will persist as we head through the day and the warming trend will begin to spread across the region. Maximum temperatures will reach over 30°C by Tuesday afternoon.

Cloud cover will persist through Christmas Day on Wednesday and into Thursday as temperatures continue to rise. High temperatures will remain in the upper 30s on Wednesday and move towards the lower 40s on Thursday.

Our next chance of rain moves into the region late Friday evening and we look ahead to the coming weekend as another low pressure area and frontal boundary is heading our way. But the warmup continues, with high temperatures moving into the lower 40s on Friday, then into the upper 40s on Saturday and Sunday, with showers likely on both days.
