Louisville vs UConn score today: UofL-UConn game highlights

Jeff Walz jokingly questioned Louisville women’s basketball’s 2024-25 schedule.

Facing four top-25 teams in the first month of the season is less than ideal for his team, which is made up mostly of rookies. It’s a test-by-fire experience with the No. 22 Cardinals moving to 5-4 on the season with one more game to play before ACC action against No. 24 NC State begins on Dec. 15.

Louisville will have more lessons to learn from defeat after losing 85-52 to second-seeded UConn in the Women’s Champions Classic on Saturday night at Barclays Center.

“It was a first-class event,” said Walz. “Unfortunately we looked like (expletive). … I take that to heart and truly apologize.”

The Cardinals have now lost two games in a row, going 4-0 against ranked opponents. They return home to perform at the KFC Yum! on Thursday at 7 p.m. to play against Grambling State. Center.

“We play a difficult schedule, but if you lose them all, it doesn’t matter,” Walz said. “…We have to find a way to win. That’s one of the things I keep challenging her about.”

At some point during the game, Walz was overheard telling his team that “they (UConn) play harder than you.”

That quickly became clear.

U of L held Huskies defenseman Paige Bueckers to just three points in the first half, but allowed a combined 29 points to defenseman Azzi Fudd and forward Sarah Strong. The Cardinals’ problems weren’t just limited to defense. They fell behind 49-24 at halftime as the undefeated Huskies ended the second quarter with a 13-3 run. The 24 points were the fewest scored at halftime since a total of 17 points were scored in last season’s 77-68 ACC Tournament loss to Notre Dame.

Although Walz expected some freshman moments, especially against quality competition, the Cardinals didn’t get much from their veteran players. Guard Merissah Russell provided a short-lived spark by opening the second quarter with five straight points. In the end it was almost half of the team’s points total.

Things got even worse in the third quarter when the Cardinals were limited to two field goals, both of which came in the final minute.

Entering the fourth quarter, UConn held a 39-point lead and retired all but one of its starters.

The Cardinals and Huskies will play Game 2 of the Shark Beauty Women’s Champions Classic, scheduled to begin today at 9 p.m. at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Tennessee and Iowa play the first game at 7 p.m

UConn leads the series over U of L 19-3, with two of the Cardinals’ wins coming in the last five years. Last season the Huskies won 86-62.

Louisville coach Jeff Walz received a technical foul after arguing a no-call. Azzi Fudd hit both free throws to give the Huskies a 51-24 lead.

Merissah Russell had a team-high eight points for the Cardinals, who shot 27% from the field in the half while the Huskies shot 51%.

The Cardinals have been scoreless for more than four minutes as the Huskies extend their lead to 20.

U of L’s bench contributed all eight of the team’s points in the second quarter.

The Cardinals began the second quarter with six straight points, five of which came from Merissah Russell.

The Cardinals missed six 3-point attempts and shot 24% from the field. Olivia Cochran had five points for the team.

The Huskies opened the game with a 5-0 run and shot 57% from the field.

The Women’s Champions Classic game between the Cardinals and Huskies will take place at 9 p.m. at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
