Macaulay Culkin with BT & Sal on the legacy of Home Alone

BT and Sal took a break from sports talk this holiday season to speak to one of the most iconic characters in the Christmas movie scene, Macaulay Culkin, the famous Home Alone star who became an icon of child acting than families Christmas movie was a monster hit in the early 90s.

The film remains well-received to this day, considered one of the most popular Christmas films of all time and representing the best of the best in a genre that has an overflowing library. Still, Home Alone and its sequel, which also stars Culkin, are among the most rewatched holiday classics, especially this time of year.

Over time, Culkin has grown to appreciate the film and the impact it has had on audiences that now span multiple generations, including his own children.

“It’s really hard for me to have perspective. I just have my perspective,” Culkin said. “I understand how this makes people feel. I know how I felt as a child when I was there. I know how I feel when I show my children. Then it manifested itself in a different way… it gave me a new appreciation.”

As for those who followed him in his early years as a child actor, Culkin says that with one exception, he couldn’t keep up with his co-stars, even as other members of the cast came together to celebrate the film’s legacy. most recently last weekend at an event in New Jersey.

“Not really. I have a little contact with Catherine O’Hara,” Culkin said, mentioning the “Schitt’s Creek” actress who played Culkin’s mother in the first two “Home Alone.” “I did about a year ago Did something with her every month. It’s always great to see her… we have a very strong connection and affection for each other.

“Not really otherwise. How many friends do you have from when you were nine?”

The two reunited when Culkin was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame last year, and the two have remained in touch. Not so much for the rest of the cast, but that hasn’t stopped Culkin from recognizing what the film has meant to the countless households who keep the film on while decorating their Christmas tree or gathering around a fire during the holidays.

Culkin has moved on to other projects, such as the hit series “Fallout,” but he’s staying true to his “Home Alone” roots as he’ll screen the classic film at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center on Friday night.

“I appreciate the love and the fandom,” Culkin said. “It has been 34 years since this film came out and it still resonates with people. The people who were children then are now showing it to their children. So I really appreciate that.”
