Macy’s is closing several dozen stores as part of a previously announced turnaround plan to save the struggling retailer.

Last year, Macy’s said it would close 150 underperforming stores by 2026 and reduce its footprint to about 350 locations once the plan is completed. The 66 store closures announced Thursday are part of this multi-year initiative. However, Macy’s had not yet announced which stores would be closed.

Macy’s CEO Tony Spring said in a news release that closing “any store is never easy,” but the locations chosen were “underproductive” for the so-called “Bold New Chapter” strategy, which is a shift toward preying on wealthier ones Shopper’s upscale offerings include brands like Bloomingdale’s and Bluemercury.

Retail has split over the past few decades, with lower-end stores focused on cost savings, such as Walmart, doing particularly well. But this also applies to luxury brands, as cash-strapped shoppers have been able to maintain spending despite higher prices. Macy’s is in the middle.

The company is “closing unproductive Macy’s stores so we can focus our resources and prioritize investments in our future stores where customers are already responding positively to better product offerings and improved service,” Spring said.

The strategy aims to fend off activist investors and boost the company’s declining sales and shares. But shares of Macy’s (M) have fallen about 15% since the plan was announced a year ago.

Activist investors are calling on the company to make changes to improve the stock and its prospects. They argue that Macy’s is sitting on real estate more valuable than the company itself, and that its troubles are making its shares so unattractive that they are worth less than the sum of their parts.

Macy’s has disputed this, arguing that the company is on track to return to sustainable growth.

The 66 locations affected are a mix of the flagship department store, its furniture-focused spinoff, and Backstage, Macy’s off-price rival to Marshalls and TJ Maxx. Liquidation sales will begin in the coming days and some stores have already closed.
