Macy's is closing more stores after Christmas. What to know in Michigan

Macy’s plans to close more stores this year than previously announced, which could mean shoppers in Michigan could be affected.

According to the company’s third-quarter earnings report, the department store chain plans to close about 15 more locations after the holiday season, an increase from the 50 closures previously announced. For the full third quarter of 2024, the company reported net sales of $4.7 billion, a decrease of 2.4% compared to third quarter 2023 sales.

“We now expect to close approximately 65 locations this year,” Macy’s CEO Tony Spring said on the earnings call. “In our typical rhythm, there will be closures after the holidays.”

The increased closures are part of Macy’s strategy to accelerate the closure of “no-go-forward stores,” which are poorly performing locations. The company remains committed to closing a total of 150 underperforming locations by the end of 2026.

Macy’s seeks to reposition the company through an initiative called “A Bold New Chapter,” focused on strengthening the Macy’s name, accelerating luxury growth, and simplifying and modernizing operations.

“A bold new chapter serves as a powerful call to action. “It challenges the status quo to create a more modern Macy’s Inc.,” Spring said in a statement. “We are taking the necessary steps to reinvigorate relationships with our customers through improved shopping experiences, relevant ranges and compelling value for money.”
