Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade begins as heavy rain hits NYC

It may have rained during their parade, but the crowds gathered for the 100th annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade didn’t let it dampen their spirits.

Heavy rain and chilly conditions are expected to continue in the Big Apple on Thursday morning – although the poor weather outlook apparently hasn’t stopped millions of parade-goers from donning ponchos, umbrellas and even turkey hats and taking to the streets of New York City.

The “Spirit of New York” dance group was in great spirits despite the rain and cold. Members, wearing see-through ponchos over their uniforms, rode the train downtown before the event, which begins at 8:30 a.m. on Manhattan’s Upper West Side.

Artists, floats and new balloons like Spider-Man and Minnie Mouse will snake 2.5 miles downtown to the Macy’s Herald Square flagship store on 34th Street.

This year’s parade features 17 giant helium-filled character balloons, 22 floats, 15 novelty and historic inflatables, 11 marching bands, 700 clowns and performances by award-winning entertainers.

New floats this year include a knight and dragon in battle made from real pasta elements, courtesy of food brand Rao’s, as well as a float celebrating the Bronx Zoo’s 125th anniversary.

“What you see right now is what you will get. Cool, cold rain,” Fox Forecast Center meteorologist Jordan Overton told The Post Thursday morning. “Make sure you have a rain jacket with you for the rest of the day and throughout the afternoon.”

There will likely be persistent rain and dark, heavy clouds over the five counties for most of the day.

“The intensity will ease, maybe there will be very heavy rain for 15 to 20 minutes and then maybe 15 to 20 minutes of light rain. There will be this persistent, chaotic feeling for most of today,” Overton said.

Snoopy, Pikachu and Bluey may get drenched, but the iconic balloon characters shouldn’t float away as winds are expected to remain calm throughout Thursday.

While the parade takes place each year rain or shine, Macy’s popular oversized balloons are not allowed to fly in sustained winds of more than 23 miles per hour.

“In the afternoon the speed will probably increase to 10, 15 or maybe even 20 miles per hour, but that won’t be a big factor for the parade, at least not now,” Overton said.

Any respite likely won’t come until after Turkey Day, as the rain is expected to ease well into Thursday afternoon or evening.

Black Friday shoppers can also rest easy this evening: Conditions are expected to become clearer in New York after the holiday ends.

Even though the rain is expected to stop on Friday, shoppers should still bundle up as temperatures are likely to drop into the low 30s overnight.
