Madison County is preparing roads for winter weather

MADISON CO., Ala. (WAFF) – The snow is just around the corner and the roads are fine right now, but AAA is expecting a 200% increase in roadside assistance calls this winter storm.

Temperatures are dropping and snow is heading towards the Tennessee Valley. Madison County Commission officials say they are already working hard to prepare for this winter storm.

Madison County Commissioner Phil Vandiver said crews have been working hard to create a brine to pre-treat the roads before snow falls.

“First the roads are cleared and put in good condition, then the snow plows have to come and clear the snow from the road so that there is no frozen mess on the way the night the temperatures freeze again,” said Vandiver.

This is all to make our roads a little safer during the harsh winter storm.

AAA’s Clay Ingram said that while they expect there will be fewer people on the roads, they expect a 200 percent increase in calls for roadside assistance. He adds that drivers need to be patient while waiting for help.

“It will be difficult for us. Most of our service providers do not have four-wheel drive tow trucks. This is a rare item and you just don’t see them often. So we’re going to have issues just like everyone else because of the road conditions,” Ingram said.

Ingram said staying home is the safest option if you don’t need to drive.

“Most likely it will be very dangerous for anyone to be out and about. Even if you have a four-wheel drive truck. If you even suspect there is ice out there, you just need to stay where you are, stay warm and stay out of your car,” Ingram said.
