Magnitude 7.0 earthquake strikes Northern California, triggering tsunami warning | California

A powerful earthquake struck the Northern California coast on Thursday morning, shaking communities and triggering emergency warnings for tremors and tsunami risks just before 11 a.m. local time.

The quake had a magnitude of 7.0 and originated near the historic and picturesque town of Ferndale in Humboldt County. It was felt in San Francisco, more than 260 miles (418 km) away. According to initial estimates by the US Geological Survey (USGS), around 1.3 million people felt the tremors. The risk to human life also remains low.

Cell phones buzzed across the region, warning of impending tremors and providing plenty of time to brace and hide. Tsunami warnings were also raised for at least 5.3 million people along the California coast and Oregon, warning of large waves, strong currents and coastal flooding that could last into the afternoon.

Following the alarm, Bay Area Rapid Transit trains were halted while subway stations were evacuated as significant delays were announced throughout the system and the San Francisco Fire Department began clearing beaches. Evacuations were underway as official forecasts said tsunami activity could reach San Francisco by 12:30 p.m. PT.

Some affected areas, particularly those bordering the coast and recently saturated with rain, could be prone to landslides, USGS data shows.

No immediate damage reports were provided, but the USGS issued an “Amber Warning” meaning that “some damage is possible and impacts should be relatively limited.”

“Overall, the population in this region lives in structures that are earthquake resistant, although there are structures at risk,” a USGS bulletin said, noting that brick masonry construction poses the greatest risk.

Videos of the aftermath posted online by local reporters showed disheveled shelves in grocery stores and broken glasses and bottles on bar floors. Residents shared pictures of the contents of cupboards thrown into the flood. However, only minor damage has been reported so far.
