Magnitude 7.0 earthquake strikes northern California, with at least 93 aftershocks reported

The United States Geological Survey announced that it has detected a preliminary magnitude 7.0 earthquake in Northern California. The epicenter was discovered at 10:44 a.m. 61 miles west-southwest of Ferndale in Humboldt County. The earthquake was detected offshore. As far away as Redding, people felt the earthquake more than 300 kilometers from the epicenter. A tsunami warning has been issued for the California coast, which includes Santa Cruz County. According to the USGS, at least 93 aftershocks were detected after the first 7.0 magnitude earthquake. Some of them achieved a value above 4.0. Gov. Gavin Newsom, as part of an unrelated announcement, issued a brief statement saying he had spoken to the Office of the Emergency Manager. He also signed a state of emergency for that part of the state. This means more resources are available for the affected areas. An early damage assessment is currently underway.
