Major TV streaming service abruptly increases prices by $10 and angry customers rage: “Cancellation immediately”

Several streamers are angry and canceling their YouTube TV accounts after an unexpected $10 price increase.

YouTube TV customers were quick to express their displeasure on social media after the streaming service sent out emails on December 12 informing viewers of the change.

“Congratulations to YouTube TV for becoming the very thing it swore to destroy.” $82.99 a month? “At this rate, the next big innovation will be…cable TV, reinvented as a disruptive technology,” one X user wrote.

YouTube TV also made the announcement on social media platforms, confirming that existing account holders would see the price increase starting January 13th.

However, the current increased price for a full subscription of $82.99 applies to all potential YouTube TV users who do not already have an account.

“We do not make these decisions lightly and recognize that this impacts our members,” tweeted YouTube TV on X.

“With many exciting shows and live events coming up in 2025, we remain committed to bringing you the best of television in one place.”

Social media users’ frustration has been high since the announcement and more than one person disagreed with YouTube TV’s surprise email.

YouTube TV announced that it would increase its monthly price by $10 to $82.99 per month

“I will cancel YouTube TV when the price increase occurs.” $84 + $90 for high-speed Wi-Fi is no longer cheaper than a regular cable/internet package. “I’m out,” one X user wrote.

Another person tweeted: “Damn… it feels like prices are going up $10 a day! This might be my last straw.”

One X user noted that other streaming platforms like Amazon Prime, HBO Max, and Paramount+ offer sports games that a fan might want to watch on YouTube TV.

Additionally, several people suggested that YouTube TV account holders could use other types of streaming platforms that are cheaper.

“Just join the sling gang, guys. “It’s (somewhat to significantly, depending on how much sport you want) cheaper than YouTube TV,” one tweeter wrote, while one person told @TeamYouTube that the company “no longer adds value” due to its frequent price hikes.

Before its current controversy, YouTube TV was a commercial success after its launch in 2017.

Back then, YouTube TV allowed customers to watch TV shows and movies for just $35 a month.

The company increased its price to $50 per month in 2019 and as of March 2023, the base price for YouTube TV was $72.99 per month.

The various factors that have led to the streaming service’s price increases include the streaming service’s channel expansions and the “rising cost of content.”

The platform currently has nearly 10 million active members and over 100 channels of broadcast, cable and regional sports networks.

It also features a DVR with unlimited storage and the ability to share six accounts in one household with three simultaneous streams.

However, YouTube TV is not the only streaming platform that annoys its viewers with price increases.

Disney made headlines in October when it announced it would increase prices for Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ accounts.

Disney+ with ads went from $7.99 to $9.99 per month, and the ad-free version is now $15.99 – $2 more than before.

Hulu’s ad-supported plan rose $2 to $9.99 and its ad-free option rose $1 to $18.99.

ESPN+’s ad option also increased by $1 to $11.99 per month.

The price hikes sparked frustration among social media users, with one Reddit user calling Disney a “greedy platform” after he unsubscribed.

Peacock also made headlines with the price increase that the streaming platform implemented to increase its profits.

The streaming platform increased its premium monthly subscription by $2, bringing the total to $7.99 per month.

Peacock also increased the price of its premium annual subscription by $20, to a total of $79.99 per year.

Some of the highly publicized price increases were made by Netflix in 2023 after increasing the cost of its Premium and Basic plans.

Additionally, Netflix later triggered social media users after discontinuing its basic ad-free plan in the US and France in July 2024.
