Making the breakthrough: Assessing the Bears players and coaches in the loss to the Seahawks

QUARTERBACK – F

Caleb Williams (16 of 28, 122 yards, no TDs, one INT, seven sacks, 53.0 rating) was anything but good, but was hurt early on third-down drops from Keenan Allen and Rome Odunze. Most of Williams’ early success came on short passes – screens to D’Andre Swift (24 yards) and DJ Moore (18 yards), as well as a 16-yard pass to Allen after a shotgun snap while on the ground. Williams’ best throw, a 17-yard touchdown pass to Odunze, was negated by a holding penalty.

Offensive Line – F

Although rookie Kiran Amegadjie was active, veteran Larry Borom started in place of injured left tackle Braxton Jones (broken ankle). Jake Curhan started in place of injured left defender Teven Jenkins (calf). Late in the third quarter, Borom surrendered a 14-yard sack to Uchenna Nwosu when he couldn’t decide which of the two rushers to block and didn’t get one. The line did its best work on well-executed screen passes. But a holding penalty against Curhan negated a 17-yard touchdown pass from Williams to Odunze. Curhan also had a false start with 2:14 left, but was saved by a 15-yard pass from Williams to Moore.

DEFENSE LINE – A

It was a tough start as the Seahawks went 53 yards on their first seven-carry field goal drive. But the line was better after that: Montez Sweat and Byron Cowart sacked Geno Smith and Jacob Martin picked off a pass to force the Seahawks to settle for a 50-yard field goal. Darrell Taylor sacked Smith in the third quarter, but the Seahawks recovered.

SECONDARY – A

Kyler Gordon (six tackles) forced a fumble and recovered it in the third quarter. He returned the ball 62 yards for an apparent touchdown that would have given the Bears the lead, but was ruled for recovering the ball. Gordon also broke up a third-and-2 pass that forced a punt. Tyrique Stevenson did a good job of not reacting when DK Metcalf ran into his facemask and headbutted him. Metcalf drew two personal foul penalties.

SPECIAL TEAMS – B

Gunner Tyler Scott brought the Soldier Field crowd to its feet with an open-field tackle on Jaelon Darden at the Seahawks’ 5-yard line on a punt return in the first quarter. Tory Taylor posted a net average of 46.7 yards and completed five of seven punts inside 20 yards. Cairo Santos hit a 42-yard field goal.
