“Malcolm in the Middle” revival on Disney+ with Muniz, Cranston

Life isn’t as unfair as it turns out. A “Malcolm in the Middle” revival has been ordered to Disney+, diversity has learned.

The reboot of the series comes from original series creator Linwood Boomer, with original stars Frankie Muniz, Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek set to reprise their roles. Disney Branded Television has ordered four new episodes of the popular sitcom. A premiere date has not yet been set.

The official logline states: “Malcolm (Muniz) and his daughter are drawn into the family chaos when Hal (Cranston) and Lois (Kaczmarek) demand his presence at their 40th wedding anniversary party.”

“’Malcolm in the Middle’ is a groundbreaking sitcom that captures the essence of family life with humor, heart and sensitivity,” said Ayo Davis, president of Disney Branded Television. “His hilarious and heartfelt portrayal of an endearingly chaotic family resonated with audiences of all ages and we are thrilled to welcome back the original cast to bring this magic to life again.” With Linwood Boomer and the creative team at the helm, this will New episodes will offer all the laughs, pranks and mayhem fans love – along with a few surprises that remind us why this show is so timeless.”

Malcolm in the Middle originally aired on Fox from 2000 to 2006 for seven seasons and 151 episodes. The original cast included Muniz, Cranston, Kaczmarek, Justin Berfield, Erik Per Sullivan and Christopher Masterson.

The series proved incredibly popular upon its debut and helped popularize single-camera comedies on television. The show received 33 Emmy nominations over its run and ultimately won seven of the statuettes. These include two awards for Cloris Leachman for best guest actress in a comedy and two awards each for best direction and best screenplay for a comedy series. The entire series is currently streaming on Hulu and for bundle subscribers on Hulu on Disney+.

“Malcolm in the Middle literally changed the face of the TV comedy landscape and redefined the genre when it premiered two decades ago,” said Karey Burke, president of 20th Television. “When Linwood Boomer suggested that it might be time to bring everyone’s favorite dysfunctional family together for a little reunion, we couldn’t think of a more iconic and influential series to revisit, alongside a truly brilliant cast that “We could reunite.”

Boomer created the original series and returns as a writer and executive producer. Cranston, Tracy Katsky of KatCo, Gail Berman and Arnon Milchan, Yariv Milchan and Natalie Lehmann of New Regency are executive producers. Ken Kwapis will direct and executive produce all four episodes. Jimmy Simons and Laura Delahaye are co-executive producers. The limited series is produced by 20th Television and New Regency.

Muniz is represented by Established Artists and Jackoway Austen Tyerman. Cranston is represented by UTA and Johnson Shapiro. Kaczmarek is represented by Paradigm Talent Agency.

The news makes this the third broadcast series from the early 2000s to receive some sort of reboot or revival news in the past week. It was previously reported that a “Scrubs” reboot from series creator Bill Lawrence is in development at ABC, while a reboot of Elgin James’ “Prison Break” has received a pilot order at Hulu.
