Man City 1-1 Everton: Erling Haaland’s missed penalty sums up the run

After Toffees striker Iliman Ndiaye canceled out Bernardo Silva’s opener, the decisive moment came in the second half when Vitalii Mykolenko brought down Savinho in the penalty area.

A neck-and-neck race broke out during the VAR review when Everton captain Seamus Coleman received a yellow card for attempting to block Haaland, who had the ball in his hands.

Ultimately, the yellow card appeared to be a well-deserved decision for the team and Pickford appeared to relish his big moment, bouncing up and down his line, sticking out his tongue before leaning low to his right to push the ball away.

Pickford has saved big penalties for England on the international stage and this was his seventh penalty save since joining Everton in 2017.

City were so lucky at the moment that they managed to recycle the ball and Haaland headed in, but the play was ruled out for offside, much to the delight of the traveling fans.

Haaland had taken 15 of 16 of his previous penalties in the league, the other hitting the woodwork, while this was the first one he saw saved.

“It’s good that the analysts are giving him as many penalties as possible,” Dyche said of Pickford’s save. “We thank him for spontaneously making the right decision.”

Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson said on BBC Radio 5 Live: “Pickford are good at putting pressure on strikers. Haaland must have felt the pressure there, there was silence here.”

“It was a decent save but a really bad penalty. He didn’t spin the ball around like a left-footed player should. A bad penalty, but a good save.”

Former England defender Matt Upson added on Amazon Prime: “It was a brilliant save from Pickford. He enjoys situations like this. He doesn’t make life any easier for the penalty taker.”

“But the fact that Haaland missed that penalty says a little about how much confidence this team has at the moment.”
